YES Emerson Serves Process Planning Team (PPT)
The YES PPT has been working together reviewing the information gathered from our March 19th YES event where the congregation brainstormed potential future focuses and projects towards a social justice focus for our Emerson congregation. We are optimistic and energized to help teams of passionate and dedicated volunteers flourish on future projects.
Some ideas in review for the summer season include social justice movie and Q&A nights, NAACP talks, and an educational field trip to the Civil Rights museum. Stay tuned to the Weekly Emerson Notebook, the Synergist, and the YES bulletin board (along the ARE hallway next to the office) for more information on these and other possible events.
We look forward to many opportunities to put our faith in action, reflect on our experiences, and continue to grow together as a congregation. Contact Faith in Action for more information.
Atlanta Pride Parade 2015
Our activities include:
- Earth Day
- Heart in the Park
- Share the Basket
- Guest at Your Table
- Ethical Eating
- Immigration Reform
- Death Penalty
- Volunteering with Cobb Christmas
- Transgender Day of Remembrance
On Earth Day 2012, members of the congregation got dirty for Mother Earth in support of our 7th UU Principle of "Respecting the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part." The youngest members made pinecone bird feeders and planted butterfly bushes on the playground. Older youth and adults did a roadside clean up and took a guided nature walk with an environmental engineer.
Heart in the Park
Since 2009 Emerson members and friends have met at East Cobb Park the Sunday before Valentine’s Day in a public witness in support of marriage equality. We believe that the First Principle of our faith, respecting "the inherent worth and dignity of every person," applies equally to people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Please join us in standing on the side of love at the 5th Annual Heart in the Park. Please wear red and bring your signs!
For more information see the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations' Marriage Equality website.
Share the Basket Program
Share the Basket is a program to live out the mission and vision of Emerson UUC and to promote greater outreach to our community and to share our resources with those who serve the most in need. One Sunday per month Emerson UUC donates half of received offerings to a pre-approved non-profit organization. On designated Share the Basket Sundays, the non-pledge collection is divided equally with the recipient organization; all donor checks shall be made out to EUUC so that a single check from Emerson can be delivered to the organization. The Faith in Action (FIA) Committee administers the Share the Basket program and recommends the recipient organizations.
A Word About Pledge Payments
Checks addressed to Emerson UUC that are marked as a “Pledge” payment will not be included in the program. Checks intended for the recipient charity given during the Share the Basket offertory should be made out to "Emerson UU Congregation” with "Share the Basket" in the "memo" line. Checks written to the Emerson UUC will be acknowledged as a tax deductible donation.
