Adult Religious Education at Emerson
During the past year, Emerson UU Congregation has expanded the Adult Religious Education (ARE) portion of its Sunday morning activities to more closely match the already large youth RE program. Emerson is fortunate to have talented members who are interested in leading a wide variety of ARE classes, on subjects as diverse as social activism, parenting, spirituality, history and psychology, and as a result, the ARE offerings have been very popular and well attended.
Some of the recent offerings include:
- Our American Roots: UU History
- Reinventing Christmas
- Parents as Resident Theologians
- Dealing with Grief
- Peacemaking
- The UU Guide to the Bible
- Introduction to the Pagan Path
- Faith in Action: Ethical Eating
In addition, ARE classes have included guest speakers from community groups, educational hikes, career seminars and a monthly parenting book club. Due to the increasing interest, an additional series of classes meeting on weekday evenings is being planned for next year.
ARE classes meet on Sunday’s during “second hour” (11:30am to 12:30pm), which is the same time as RE for children and youth. Usually there are one to three classes available each Sunday, some of which are offered each Sunday (such as career seminars) and others which are single events. ARE classes are announced in the weekly Notebook, the Synergist (monthly newsletter) and on Emerson’s Web site.
