Youth RE Safety Policy

RE leaders and volunteers working with children and youth are required to abide by our Code of Ethics for Adults Working with Children and Youth (PDF PDF File, 72kb). To help assure the children’s safety, all RE volunteers are also required to have criminal background checks.

In addition, Emerson UU Congregation has an “Honoring the Children” anti-abuse policy in place. A copy of this policy is available for reference in the church library.

All volunteers who are new to the Emerson UU RE program are interviewed by our Director of Religious Ed and background checked at a cost of $7 per adult per family. Nursery caregivers are also carefully screened. We take our responsibility, as providers of safety for each and every child and teen, very seriously.

Playground safety is also a prime concern. We have a “tot lot” play area designed for fun and safe play for 1-4 year olds and a bigger play structure in our “big kids” area for K – 5th graders. There must always be an adult monitoring playground play. Common sense prevails – no rough-housing, jumping off swings or the structure is allowed. We think the playground is a good place to practice our UU Values. Jr. and Sr. High Youth are invited to Hang out at the Memorial Garden area, picnic tables or in fellowship hall.
