The Emerson Drummers are a community group, open to people of all ages who want to learn and celebrate the joy of West African drumming music and culture. We honor the rhythms of numerous ethnic groups from West Africa, primarily the Malinke and Susu people of Guinea.
Everyone is welcome to learn the playing technique for the drums and the songs. Classes are very fun and high-energy, and you can be carried by the group rhythm to be able to play more than you might think.
Once you learn some of the basic repertoire, if you are interested you can join the performing group and play with us at performances.
We meet during warm months at East Cobb Park every Tuesday night, 7-8:30pm. In cooler months we move into the Fellowship Hall at Emerson.
The first time you attend is free, and if you let one of the members know ahead of time that you need a drum to get started we’ll do what we can to bring a loaner drum. After that, each class is $20 by drop-in basis and you come as often as you like. If you want to attend regularly and eventually join the performing group the fee is only $65 per month for however many Tuesdays there are.
